Alternative Energy Coming into Focus in Portugal
PortugalResident.com reports that renewable energy in Portugal was an agenda item in a meeting attended by the Secretary of State for Industry and Innovation and Portuguese renewable energy experts. Portugal is looking to ward off its rising energy prices and is currently utilizing 121 wind farms with 767 machines which contribute 10 percent of electricity. Efforts are culminating to reduce Portugal’s reliance on gas and oil and bring environmental awareness to the forefront. Growth possibilities, including offshore wind farms and tidal power stations are being investigated and the government expects that renewable energy sources will be providing 35 percent of the country’s electricity by 2010.
