Schneider Power To Invest $90 Million In Ontario Wind Farms

Schneider Power, Inc. has announced plans to invest a total of $90 million to develop three new wind farms across the province of Ontario, Canada and expand one existing wind farm.

The four wind farms will generate a total of 41.6 Megawatts of wind power, enough to power approximately 11,000 homes.

Golden Triangle News reports that Great Plains Wind & Energy has sold its entire interest in the proposed McCormick Ranch, Montana, Wind Park to Naturener S.A. Naturener S.A., a Spanish renewable energy company, intends to expand the project to 300 Megawatts of power generation and get the plant online even sooner.

Cuba Opens First Wind Farm, Building A Second

WCBS reports that Cuba has opened its first wind farm, as an experiment to reduce the country’s dependence on foreign oil. The wind farm features six wind turbines, each 180 feet tall, and is located on Isla de la Juventud, south of Havana.

The country invested $3.4 million to develop the wind farm, and it is estimated they will save $136,000 in fuel costs during its first year of operation. Cuba intends to finish construction of a second wind farm with six more wind turbines before the end of 2007.

Tasmania Wind Farm Goes Online

ABC Tasmania reports that the Studland Bay wind farm has begun generating wind power. By the end of March, the company expects all 25 wind turbines to be online and fully operational. When completed, the wind farm will generate 75 Megawatts of wind energy, enough to power 30,000 homes.

Utah Wind Farm To Power California Homes

KSL reports that U-P-C Wind of Milford, Utah, has signed a 20 year contract to supply wind power to the Southern California Public Power Authority. U-P-C Wind is constructing a wind farm in Utah which is expected to be completed and generating wind power by the end of 2008. Once online, the Utah wind farm will supply enough energy to power 43,000 homes in California.

Statkraft Gets Approval For Fourth Wind Farm

Renewable Energy Access reports that the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate have granted Statkraft a license to develop the Selbjorn Wind Farm. When completed, the wind farm will generate 40 Megawatts of wind energy.

Statkraft currently operates three wind farms.

Schneider and Bullfrog Launch Two New Wind Turbines

Renewable Energy Access reports that Schneider Power Inc. and Bullfrog Power have announced two new wind turbines on Manitoulin Island, Ontario. Through a 20 year purchase agreement, all of the electricity generated by the wind turbines will be supplied to the province of Ontario.

Xcel Energy To Build Minnesota Wind Farm

The Star Tribune reports that Xcel Energy Inc. has announced plans to develop its own wind farm in the state of Minnesota. When completed in 2009, the wind farm project will generate approximately 100 Megawatts of power and be capable of powering 100,000 homes. The company intends to invest approximately $210 million to develop the wind farm project.

New British Wind Farm Under Construction

Manchester Evening News reports that construction crews have begun development of a new wind farm at South Moor and Knowl Moor, near Manchester, England. When completed, the new wind farm will have occupy a two mile stretch and consist of 26 turbines. The wind farm will generate enough power to supply between 40,000 and 65,000 homes, a total of 65 Megawatts.

World’s Greenest Building Features Wind Turbine

WorldChanging reports on the world’s greenest building, the Alberici corporate headquarters. Amongst its environmentally-friendly features is a 65 kilowatt wind turbine. The wind turbine generates approximately 18% of their electrical requirements - enough to power all lighting in the building.
