San Francisco Public Utilities Commission Head Quarters to be 40% Self Sufficient in Energy Needs

<p>Dexigner reports that a $178 million, 254, 000 square foot headquarters for San Francisco Public Utilities Commission will be built to demonstrate energy efficiency, water recycling, and reduced carbon emissions.  The construction will be paid for by selling surplus real estate and other means, not from paying customers.  The building will include dozens of wind turbines on the roof and solar panels in the outer walls giving it the opportunity to create 40% of its own energy needs.</p>

<p>Mlive.com reports that last week Govenor Jennifer Granholm of Michigan announced the construction of a wind farm in Huron County, in the thumb of the state.  While wind generation will not replace coal or nuclear generated power in the state, this wind farm will provide enough power for 15, 000 homes.</p>

<p>iBerkshires.com reports that the Center for Ecological Technology has released tour dates that the Berkshire Renewable Energy Collaborative sponsors at the Green Mountain Power Corporation wind facility in Searsburg, Vermont.  Tour topics will range from site selection for a facility to wildlife protection .  Tourists will learn about issues that affect energy future at one of the first wind facilities of the northeast region.</p>

Construction Begins on North Dakota’s Largest Wind Farm

<p>KXnet.com reports a 106-turbine wind farm has begun construction in Cavalier County, North Dakota.  Otter Tail Power Company plans to have the blades turning by the end of the year.  This project would make the state’s largest wind farm at an estimated cost of $250 milllion.  The wind farm is predicted to produce 160 megawatts of electricity a year.</p>

New Wind Farm in the Highlands of Michigan to Generate More Power

<p>Cadillac News reports that Heritage Sustainable Energy has gained access to more than 9,000 acres of land from almost 75 property owners through wind leases in Osceola, Wexford, and Missaukee counties in Michigan.  Assuming all permits are approved, the company is looking at building 20 turbines and would create an additional 70 megawatts to Michigan’s current wind generation.  The state currently has more the 50 projects in planning stages, including a joint venture between John Deere Wind Energy and Wolverine Power.</p>

Iowa Receives Their First Locally Owned Wind Farm

<p>KMEG14.com reports that Crosswind Energy LLC, a group of local investors in Siouland, Iowa have introduced the first locally owned wind farm in the state.  The ten turbines that make up the farm cost $30 million dollars and will create electricity for 6,400 homes.  The United States Department of Agriculture donated around $3 million dollars to the project.</p>

New Wind Farm to Provide Electricity to Two Universities

<p>High Plains Journal reports that a new wind farm in Wessington Springs, South Dakota will provide additional electricity to South Dakota State University and University of South Dakota.  The farm is expected to be complete by the end of 2008 and will be developed by Babcock & Brown.</p>

Illinois County Citizens Sue

<p>Pantagraph.com reports that McClean County, Illinois residents sued the conty to stop the development of a proposed wind farm.  Construction of a 100-turbine wind farm would begin this summer pending the approval of the building permits, a special-use permit for the project has been approved.  The citizens claim the county denied landowners’ rights to fully express opposition to the project.</p>
