New Wind Company Counts the Cost

The Daily Telegram reports newly formed Great Lakes Wind LLC is working to set-up a community wind project of 4 or 5 wind turbines to power the Global Ethanol Plant near Blissfield, Michigan.  More than $22,000 of equipment has been ordered for wind-metering which will stay atop cell phone towers for 2 or 3 years to collect data for turbine installation locations.  In the meantime, the cost of wind turbines could rise to $2 million a piece by 2012.

WHOtv.com reports the Story County wind farm has laid the foundation for their 100 turbines.  In May the actual turbines will be installed.

Large Wind Farm Breaks Ground

Salina.com reports the Meridian Way Wind Farm has scheduled ground breaking to begin construction on their two phases.  The $320 million wind farm will create 201 MW of wind energy and will create 8-12 jobs.  Electric companies in Joplin, Missouri and Topeka, Kansas will purchase the energy produced from this wind farm.

Forbes.com reports Rhode Island is seeking private companies to bid for an offshore wind project.  The state is looking at creating15% of their electricity needs using offshore wind power by the year 2011 - a feat almost impossible to complete.  The offshore wind project would be located south of Block Island to create 1.3 million MW of wind energy a year.

Boston Herald.com reports Rhode Island government officials have requested bids from private companies to develop an off-shore wind farm.

The Chatham Daily News reports BowArk Energy LTD and Wind Prospect Inc have proposed a 150MW wind farm for Chatham-Kent, Canada.  The 50 wind turbines in the project would be placed on 10,000 acres of land covering three townships.

Proposed Wind Farm Could Bring Benefits to Scottish Community

BBC News reportsthree wind turbines have been proposed in Scotland’s Western Isles that could create an income of £150,000 from the sale of electricity.  The Ore Valley Housing Association has been awarded £200,000 to conduct a feasibility study.  The money generated from the wind farm could go to create jobs and other projects to benefit the North Harris community.

New Regulations Could Jeopardize Planned Wind Farm

The St. Catharine Standard reports new regional regulations on wind farms could jeopardize the planned 10 MW wind farm planned in Canada’s Niagra Region.  The new regulations call for all cables to be buried underground and for turbines to be placed back from roads a distance of their height.  The changes could triple the cost of the planned wind farm that is set to be operational by 2010.  It is still unclear whether these new rules will apply to those projects already underway.

Siemens Energy Provides Wind Turbines for Two Projects

North American Wind Power reports Siemens Energy will supply 130 wind turbines for two wind farms in Washington.  The Windy Point will receive 72 turbines and Wind Flats will receive 58 turbines, each turbine will provide 2.3 MW of wind energy capacity.  Siemens will also provide two years of service and maintenance on these turbines.

World Changing reports Greensburg, Kansas was hit by a tornado last May.  In its reconstruction the city is looking to wind power, solar power, geothermal & manure as power sources.  It will also be a city standard for new building to meet LEED platinum certification standards, a first in the country.  Also, being such an agricultural city, the 2008 Greensburg Sustainable Comprehensive Master Plan will be in effect to attract biofuel companies to conduct business.
