GE offshore turbines to shed gearboxes
SiliconIndia reports that General Electric plans to manufacture gearbox-free offshore wind turbines. The company has recently acquired the Norway-based ScanWind, which features direct-drive turbines that do not require gearboxes. ScanWind’s drive train technology would provide the basis for GE’s future portfolio of offshore wind turbines, which GE perceives to boost reliability of offshore systems.
